Why 27 paychecks can happen

A year has 365 days, which is 26 biweekly periods (364 days) plus one day. That extra day slowly shifts paydays earlier each year, and about every 11 years a biweekly schedule fits 27 paydays into one calendar year. In 2026 that happens only for a Thursday payroll whose first payday is January 1, since December 31, 2026 is exactly 364 days later. A Friday payroll starting January 2 or January 9 gets 26 paydays.

What a 27th paycheck means

If your employer divides an annual salary by 26, a 27-paycheck year pays slightly more in total for that calendar year. Many employers instead divide by 27 in those years, making each check smaller. Benefit deductions taken per paycheck may also change, so check your pay stub in January.
