The math
365 ÷ 7 = 52.14, so a 365-day year is 52 full weeks with 1 day left over; a 366-day leap year leaves 2 days over. That is also why a date moves one weekday later each year (two after February 29): for example, January 1, 2026 is a Thursday, and January 1, 2027 is a Friday.
| Year type | Days | Weeks |
|---|---|---|
| Common year (e.g. 2026, 2027) | 365 | 52 weeks + 1 day (52.14) |
| Leap year (e.g. 2028) | 366 | 52 weeks + 2 days (52.29) |
| Average Gregorian year | 365.2425 | 52.1775 |
Why some years have 53 weeks
Calendars that number weeks, such as the ISO 8601 standard used in business and on many European calendars, start weeks on Monday and count week 1 as the week containing the year’s first Thursday. A year gets 53 ISO weeks when it starts on a Thursday, or when it is a leap year that starts on a Wednesday. 2026 starts on a Thursday, so it has 53 ISO weeks: December 31, 2026 falls in week 53. The next year with 53 ISO weeks is 2032.
Weeks, pay periods and months
Weekly pay usually means 52 paydays a year, but because of the leftover day, some years contain 53 Fridays (or whichever payday you use). Biweekly pay usually means 26 paydays, occasionally 27. A month averages about 4.35 weeks (52.18 ÷ 12), which is why monthly and weekly budgets don’t convert with a simple ×4.
