2026 federal holiday dates

These are the holidays set by 5 U.S.C. 6103. When a holiday falls on a Saturday, federal employees generally observe it on the Friday before; on a Sunday, the Monday after. Banks that follow the Federal Reserve calendar close on the federal holidays too, but when a holiday falls on a Saturday they generally do not close on the Friday before, so check your bank’s schedule around July 3.

Long weekends in 2026

Five federal holidays fall on Mondays in 2026 (Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Labor Day and Columbus Day), and three fall on Fridays (Juneteenth, observed Independence Day and Christmas). That gives eight three-day weekends for workers who get every federal holiday off, plus the Thanksgiving Thursday.

Are private employers required to give these days off?

No. Federal holidays apply to federal employees and federal offices; private employers choose their own holiday schedule, and many don’t observe Columbus Day or Veterans Day. State and local governments set their own holidays as well.
